New York Botanical Garden Student Work

I am very proud to display my students final projects from Painting Nature Science subjects with Gouache.

I have been teaching botanical art at the New York Botanical Garden for twenty five years. I am extremely pleased with the results of their hard work. Beyond teaching how to use gouache paint I focus on the elements of individual creativity, scientific accuracy, composition and artistic style with each student. Class critiques,  although taking up some class time, is valuable.  The more I can get students to ask questions and develop answers for themselves, the more I can expect them to be life-long learners who will continue to develop their artistic skills and understanding.  I encourage them to think like team members in the same way that athletes work in teams.  Their goal is help each other so that every one can benefit from the practice.
