New Paintings: Roses

Painted from live specimens purchased at
Stonehenge Farm Market in Bullville, NY.
Artwork
created at Squirrels Nest Studio, Bloomingburg, NY.

My goal was to create three new rose paintings in a small format as a trio. They are painted with watercolor. The yellow bi-colored rose was done first. A detailed pencil drawing was drawn on tracing paper and then transfered to Fabriano Artistico 300 lb watercolor paper. It started with a layer of light watercolor pencil to establish the form color hues, basic values and shading. After I used a semi- moist brush with clear water to blend the pencil. Then I used layers of watercolor paint to enhance the depth of color and subtle color transitions. Light transparent glazing of pale primary hues were used to blend, shade and mold the shapes. I work with fine Kolinsky sable brushes ranging from #000, - #3 and a larger #5 Kolinsky sable quill to add washes. Brands of watercolor include Sennelier, Daniel Smith, Shin Han & Graham. I use tube paint not pan. Yellow Bi-Color Rose, 5" x 7",

This was drawn with a pale gray wash first rather than using pencil. The rest of the painting is done with layers of watercolor. First layers are wet into wet with dry brush and blending added in later layers. Glazing with primary colors after to create subtle shadows without changing the basic color hue of the flower.

I used Caran D'ache supra color II watercolor pencils first. Then I used a large Kolinsky quill brush with clean water to blend the pencil. I used watercolor washes over the pencil to give it greater depth and tone. The leaves were done entirely in watercolor.
