New Plein Air Watercolors by Roberta Rosenthal

I have returned from vacation in Washington and Oregon. I did several plein air paintings while away. I stayed in Mill Creek, WA with my brother, Larry and his lovely significant other Jeanne. They were both extremely generous and gracious. We went on a short Princess Star Cruise to Vancouver. The boat was beautiful and the food delicious which was enjoyed by our party of six. This was my first cruise and look at a casino. I didn't play any games but I did have a relaxing time.

After our return I requested to be dropped off near Puget Sound Parks where I sat on rocky beaches overlooking magnificent and peaceful views. I painted plein air watercolors with a small travel set I put together in a folding cosmetic bag. I used Sennelier's 8 tube travel watercolor set plus a few extra favorites like Holbein shadow green, verditer blue and horizon blue. Also included were my favorite papers which included a 4 x 9" pad of Cartiere Magnani Italia cold press watercolor paper and Fabriano Artisico hot press, mechanical pencil with 2H lead, various erasers, assortment of small, medium and large brushes both sumi-e and pointed round kolinsky sables and flats, small tissue pack, small mister, single edge razor blade in an old tin box, small water dropper bottle, folding plastic palette and two paper cups that I took from my brother's garage.

We also went to a variety events like Jazz Alley in Seattle, a book signing of Robert Spector's new book, The Mom & Pop Store, at Capers in West Seattle, a Huskies football game where they won. We went walking around lakes, nature preserves and had dinner in Chinatown. A visit with cousin Jeri at her estate and lush gardens designed by Olmstead on Mercer Sound was magnificent. I got to hear about her newest documentary film project. Photos of her heirloom roses are soon to follow.

We also traveled by car to Ashland and Medford, Oregon. I did a painting of a place nicknamed, "little Tuscany" with beautiful vineyards and mountain views. I stayed with cousins Jon and Sharon on their farm ranch with a flock of sheep, a donkey and a very gentle German Shepard who woke me up in the morning with a kiss.

Yom Kippur services were participated at the magnificent and spiritually moving Havurah Shir Hadash, a Jewish Renewal congregation. Reunions with my family at my cousin Barry & Glennie's home with their lovely gardens. I also visited with Wendy Gell, my cousin, the jewelry designer and artist. I saw her newest line of wristies and wild jeweled tiaras. She had grapes and roses growing at the entrance to her unique home. Every day was filled with fun, love, enjoyment and family. Grateful I had this time for renewal and such a loving family.
