Catskill Art Society 40th Anniversary Party

Thrilled to have celebrated the Catskill Art Society's 40th Anniversary in their beautiful new home, of five years, in Livingston Manor, NY. A world class gallery and art center. The evening featured wonderful local food and drinks in a festive atmosphere. We were serenaded by a keyboard artist and guitarist who played through the evening. Dignitaries spoke about the excellent programs that highlight a community non-profit group which offers a full range of services to its members.

In addition a tour and power point presentation featured new in process improvements to the basement and second floor. The new areas hold the potential for performance areas, studios and additional exhibit space. Plastic hard hats were the signature image on t-shirts, key chains and life sized hats to get across the "work-in-progress" aspect to fund raise for the buildings completion.

In the gallery were oil paintings and photos reflecting landscapes of the area.

It was my first time on Route 17 West since completion of the new road that by passes Parksville and made the trip quicker than in the past linking Sullivan County in a rapid flow. The Bridgeville bridge is midway through completion and I look forward to when the "quickway" is fully completed.

It is now a half hour drive from Wurtsboro to Livingston Manor.

The CAS building has withstood many floodings in the area with new roof, steel beams and sump pump. The view of the stream is gorgeous but can also yield problems during severe storms.
Most often when I am there to teach art classes it has always been lovely weather. The fall leaves were faintly visible as I drove up last night.

My dedication to continuing my lifetime practice of professional fine and commercial artwork with the love of sharing my knowledge as an art educator is a full-time effort. I am renewed with crystal clear vision for which I am extremely grateful. Modern medical technology offers easy solutions to common visual problems. Dr. Robert Ritch, of New York Eye and Ear Infirmary diagnosed cataracts in my eyes a year ago. Dr. S. Modi of Seeta Eye Care in Poughkeepsie confirmed the classic "Monet" cataracts in both eyes. The successful surgery, by Dr.Modi, at Dutchess Ambulatory Surgical Center has given me perfect vision. I am so happy that I can continue to discover new inspiration on a daily basis! I no longer need glasses for driving and use lighter reading glasses for detail work!

Fall 2012

A crisp fall day. Thankful for a season of renewal and forgiveness. Looking forward to a year filled with new clients, students, new paintings and opportunities. Image below taken by Barbara Bedell and featured in the Times Herald Record news page 19.
"Artist Roberta Rosenthal donating a painting to the Ellenville Regional Hospital Auxiliary auction at Eagles Nest restaurant."

I went into Manhattan recently and past by the space once occupied by my sensei (teacher), Koho, school of sumi-e painting. It was sad to see it empty. I recently told members of the Oriental Brush Artist Guild at the Hammond Museum how I can still hear her voice when I am demonstrating painting. It never fails that I can hear many of my teachers who sit on my shoulders to guide me.

Fall 2012 New Workshops, Classes and Events

Back from summer vacation. Had a wonderful time visiting numerous gardens, artist studios in Seattle and a family reunion wedding in Ashland, Oregon. Visiting friends at downtown Seattle Pike Street Market with the brilliant bouquets of fresh flowers, fish stalls and crafts set against snow capped Mount Rainier, Puget Sound and the new ferris wheel gave me a new perspective. I feel restored and refreshed for the new year.

A clear crisp fall day to meditate on this new year. Renewal includes forgiveness. Not just for others who may have harmed us but to include ourselves a well. There is an increasing desire for me to practice my art even more this coming year. I instill a hope for sales, new clients, students and exhibition opportunities I give thanks for each day. I hope the seed I plant today withstands the cold winter to bring forth blossoms in the coming spring. This true hope is dedicated with belief in the goodness of nature and humanity.

The greatest joy is in overcoming obstacles. No matter the difficulty I have learned to take large projects and break them down to manageable size.

In the creation of art I have found much of the work is in the inner conception of pre-planning. I look at it in stages. Rough sketches, reference material to work from, good client communication, deadline guidelines, knowing the materials and practicing experimentation periods to test color pigments, brushes and palettes. In a new blog entry I will explain how this process aided me in creating one of the largest Chinese scrolls I painted as a Jewish ketubah, marriage contract, from start to completion.
